For millions of Americans living with dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD), preserving vision is a top priority. Until recently, treatment options for dry AMD were limited, leaving many patients feeling frustrated as they monitored gradual changes in their vision. Today, a new FDA-authorized technology is offering hope.
At The Center for Eye Care & Optical, we are proud to offer Valeda® Light Therapy, the first FDA-authorized photobiomodulation treatment specifically developed for patients with dry AMD.
Dry AMD is one of the leading causes of vision loss among adults over the age of 50. The condition affects the macula, the central portion of the retina responsible for the sharp, detailed vision needed for reading, driving, recognizing faces, and using digital devices.
In its early stages, dry AMD may cause few noticeable symptoms. As the condition progresses, patients may experience blurred central vision, difficulty reading, reduced contrast sensitivity, or trouble recognizing faces. Because these changes often occur gradually, regular eye examinations are essential for early detection and monitoring.
Valeda® Light Therapy is a non-invasive treatment that uses low-level light energy, known as photobiomodulation (PBM), to support retinal cell function and overall retinal health.
Photobiomodulation works by delivering specific wavelengths of visible red and near-infrared light to retinal tissue. These wavelengths are absorbed by cells and may help improve cellular energy production, supporting the retina's ability to function efficiently.
Researchers have studied photobiomodulation for decades across multiple medical fields, including wound healing, pain management, neurology, and ophthalmology. Valeda® represents the first FDA-authorized application of this technology specifically for dry age-related macular degeneration.
Many patients are familiar with consumer red-light therapy products available online and in wellness centers. However, Valeda® is a medical device designed specifically for retinal treatment.
Unlike general-use red-light devices, Valeda delivers precise wavelengths directly to the retina under the supervision of an eye care professional. The treatment protocol has been clinically studied and evaluated for patients with dry AMD.
One of the most appealing aspects of Valeda® Light Therapy is its simplicity.
Treatment sessions are performed in our office and typically take only a few minutes. During treatment, patients sit comfortably while the device delivers therapeutic light to the retina.
The standard treatment protocol consists of nine sessions completed over approximately three to five weeks.
There are:
Most patients can return to their normal daily activities immediately after treatment.
Valeda® received FDA authorization based on data from the LIGHTSITE III clinical trial, which evaluated photobiomodulation treatment in patients with dry AMD.
Clinical results demonstrated encouraging outcomes. After approximately 24 months, treated patients showed improvements in best-corrected visual acuity compared with those who did not receive treatment. Many treated eyes gained at least five letters on a standard eye chart—approximately one line of visual improvement.
While individual results vary, these findings suggest that photobiomodulation may help support retinal function and visual performance in appropriate patients.
Not every patient with dry AMD is a candidate for Valeda® Light Therapy. Determining eligibility requires a comprehensive eye examination, retinal imaging, and a detailed discussion of your visual symptoms and goals.
You may benefit from an evaluation if you:
Our doctors will carefully review your retinal health and discuss whether Valeda® may be appropriate for your specific condition.
